About Owen Cheng
My full name is Shang-Wen Cheng, and Owen is my nickname. My given Chinese name is 鄭上玟, which yielded the English translation, "Shang-Wen." At the age of eight or so, my grandmother gave me a new name "淵仁" at the recommendation of a Chinese Name Fortune Teller. The written form and significance of the new name is nice: "deep, profound" and "merciful." Somewhat ironically, the pronunciation of 淵仁 (yuan1-ren2) is homonymous to 冤人, meaning "the wrongly accused"... However, for various reasons, I have decided to stick with my original name.
I was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1979. At age 10, my parents brought me over to the United States. I went to high schools in Los Angeles, CA, Kingwood, TX, and Tallahassee, FL. While in Kingwood, I became a part of the Forest Cove Baptist Church youth group. During a summer youth group summit there, I accepted Christ into my life and began a reborn life of different challenges. I cannot say that the journey has been a smooth ride. Indeed, it was bumpy at best, but I have found great comfort knowing that I can rely completely on Christ, and that God would never forsake me. By His grace and mercy, my Lord Jesus and Savior has blessed me in more ways than I can ever ask for.
My alma mater is Florida State University
, famous for its football team, meteorology, parties, criminology, and high magnetic fields. I graduated summa cum laude from FSU in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Sciences. Go seminoles!
In Florida, I attended the Tallahassee Chinese Christian Church. When my family moved to Ohio, at first we attended Highpoint Evangelical Christian Church for a while. Later, I became a member of the growing and vibrant Columbus Chinese Christian Church. Even as I pursue graduate studies in Pittsburgh, I still sometimes go back to attend the church services and get together with the MorningStar young-adult fellowship group.
Now, I'm studying Software Engineering at CMU. For my spiritual pursuit, I meet frequently with a bunch of dynamic young-adult Christians in Pittsburgh, PCoCs. Collectively, we are part of the greater church in Pittsburgh, a gathering of believers who pursue Christ together in the city of Pittsburgh.
